The
Good Person of Trenchtown
Adapted by Michael McMillan
Jamaica, 1980.
A time of gang warfare…
Bob Marley music…
Flared trousers and platform shoes…
MAT & Sister Tree are staging
the world premiere of The Good Person of Trenchtown, a
new version of Brecht’s comedy, The Good Person of Sezuan,
updated and set in Jamaica – and featuring classic reggae music
and songs!
Three Gods descend to earth, looking for signs of goodness in a
corrupt world. Unfortunately, they can only find one good person
– and she’s a prostitute…
Brecht once suggested that he would like to see a production of
the play set in Jamaica. This idea has never been tried until
now. Michael McMillan’s version moves the action to Trenchtown
in Jamaica in the 1980s, and is written in Jamaican patois.
This will be a community production, mixing professional and
non-professional actors.
The tour will run from 4th – 23rd October. The contract for the
tour will be full-time (£400 per week). Venues include the
Arena, Wolverhampton; the Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury; artrix
Bromsgrove; the drum as well as community venues.
